At a pivotal moment in global history—marked by ongoing wars, escalating climate crises, and political instability—nuclear disarmament is not just a policy debate; it is a human rights obligation and a moral imperative.
On March 27, Youth Fusion joined a critical discussion at the Human Rights and Nuclear Disarmament event during the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Organized by the Permanent Missions of Kazakhstan and the Marshall Islands, alongside Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND), the Basel Peace Office, the World Future Council, and Youth Fusion, the event explored the urgent need to shift global security strategies away from nuclear deterrence and towards common security—> a framework rooted in diplomacy, conflict resolution, and international law.
As General Comment 36 of the UN Human Rights Committee affirms, the use or threat of nuclear weapons is fundamentally incompatible with the right to life. Despite this, nuclear deterrence remains central to the security policies of key states, perpetuating global risks.
Youth Fusion highlighted the intergenerational responsibility in shaping a future free from nuclear threats. With many young people viewing climate change as a more immediate crisis, bridging the gap between environmental action and nuclear disarmament is essential. Common security provides a unifying approach to address both challenges, ensuring that security measures do not undermine the well-being of future generations.
To achieve this, we must commit to:
– Enforcing no-first-use policies to prevent nuclear escalation.
– Establishing and expanding Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones worldwide.
– Redirecting the €90 billion spent annually on nuclear weapons toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as poverty eradication and climate action.
– Recognizing the International Court of Justice as a key instrument for upholding global security and the rule of law.
With the 2045 centenary of World War II and the 75th anniversary of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) approaching, now is the time to set a bold deadline for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. The Summit of the Future’s Declaration on Future Generations reinforces this urgency, calling for long-term commitments that align with our shared humanity.
The time to act is now. Youth Fusion remains at the forefront of this fight, ensuring that nuclear disarmament is not just an abstract goal but a tangible commitment to a peaceful and sustainable future.
